Is It Necessary To Have Blood Test Before Getting Zoloft Prescribed?
I have been taking Zoloft for many years with lots of success. I no longer have a primary care physician due to my lack of insurance. I recently went to a medical clinic that specializes in poor and uninsured. I asked for Zoloft and she said she wouldnt prescribe it to me without a blood test. It costs about $100 and I am wondering if this is necessary or if she wants me to spend money. I ask only because no other dr has asked for a blood test in the past. Thank you, Jamie
Zoloft is known to reduce sodium level in the blood. Sodium plays a significant role in maintaining blood pressure. Low sodium level leads to significant fall in blood pressure which-if drastic- causes fainting attacks/giddiness/dizziness.
Hence, the scientific way to treat with Zoloft is to measure Blood pressure and also get blood levels of electrolytes (primarily sodium and potassium) before starting Zoloft, as well as, at regular intervals while on chronic treatment with Zoloft.
So, your doctor is justified in asking you to get Serum Electrolytes test done and also record your BP, as it is the ideal practice.
