hi
haemoglobin 5.9 at any age is suggestive of anaemia.
now low count can be due to
1) low production of Hb due to multiple cause -nutrition deficency( most commen iron and or vit. B12),hormonal (hypothirodism commen),or defect at bonemarrow level where Hb production happens. complete blood count with RBC MORTHOLOGY will suggest the exact cause.
2)rapid destruction of RBC due to haemolytic tendency in infectious and autoimmune cause.Serum level billirubin (specially indirect) will increse in haemolytic anaemic condition.
3)internal or external haemorrage(like menorrhagia) also falls the Hb level.

in short, low Hb,is the just sign of many disorders.it has to be find out with proper investigations
