Is Fluid Accumulation In The Ear Due To Air Travel?

I have fluid in my ear that is not draining, and am having a procedure to correct it Mon. Two things-I did fly and it was about that time that this started(a month ago). Also , I had a cold with a lot of mucous for quite a while at the time also. The doc suggested it could be a collapsed tube (I am 70). He is going to put drops in to numb the ear and make a small injection to remove fluid or jello . I m wondering will he be able to tell if flying was the cause, and if it is , am I going to be able to fly in the future.

Hello,

As per your query, you have symptoms of fluid accumulation in the ears which is because of respiratory infection which spreads to ear and leads to Eustachian tube dysfunction and gives symptoms of ear pain. Air travel exaggerated your condition.

Need not to worry. You should apply warm dry compresses to external ear. Do meditation and blow mouth exercises. Avoid inserting sharp instrument in ear canal and maintain complete cleanliness. Do warm saline gargles and take steam twice a day.

I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis. The doctor may examine your ear with otoscope and may prescribe antibiotics ( Amoxicillin) at least for 10 days along with anti-inflammatory medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
