Is Difficulty In Gauging The Source Of Sounds Normal?

Hi, I had grommets inserted in both right and left ears over a month ago. The reason was dysfunctional Eeustacian tubes. Prior to surgery the left one was totally blocked, the right one wasn t as bad but decided to do both. Now The left seems perfect but my right ear not as good, in fact it seems hard to figure out the source of a sound, i.e. if I am upstairs I can hear a sound downstairs but turns up to be upstairs in a different room. Is this normal? I have a machine called the Ear popper. Should I use it? Are there any remedies that I can use at home? Thanks.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query the sound which seems difficult is probably due to tinnitus which can be cause by many factors like ear infection, Eustachian tube dysfunction, stress , temporomandibular joint problem , wisdom tooth , cervical spondylosis and increase blood pressure. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order certain test like audiometry , CT scan ,MRI , low and high pitched ringing to rule out conditions like hearing loss , exposure to loud noises , earwax buildup , middle ear infection. You should take proper antibiotic like gentamicin . Put otogesic ear drops to prevent further infection. Keep your ear dry , cover ear while bathing. Doctor may also prescribe supplement like ginkgo biloba.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
