Is Aviane And Orsythia The Same Medication?
is Aviane and Orsythia the same medication? my daughter had been prescribed Aviane, the pharmacy switched it to Orsythia in December 2013, her mood changed drastically where she had thoughts of ending her life. she had been prescribed Prozac 20 mg daily she took that for 2 weeks (now it has been d/c) she is currently in the psych ward on suicide watch (since Thursday evening) the Psych doctor has diagnosed her with bipolar (there is no family history of this disease) The Dr ordered Abilify which had horrible side effects, currently she is prescribed Risperdahl 1mg at bedtime, her first dose will be tonight. I asked them to D/C the birth control. all her lab values have been normal cbc with diff, bmp, lipid, tsh, drug test negative as well as pregnancy test negative. I am wondering if her thoughts of suicide is related to the Orsythia.

Both Aviane and Orsythia (levonorgestrel/ethynil estradiol) are the same drugs but with different brand names. The only psychiatric effects known for these drugs are depression and panic disorder. On the other hand, it is possible that your daughter might have had a pre-existing condition that was reinforced and/or precipitated by the drug.
But it is very unlikely that taking Orsythia alone caused her present symptoms. I recommend she is is taken off birth control right now, which is the sensible thing to do, and encouraged to take the prescribed medication regularly. Wishing her swift recovery and all the best.
