Is TSH Value Of 6.5 A Cause For Concern?

HI. My TSH is 6.5. Doc has asked that I take Thyronorm 25 mcg for 3 months and then re-do testing again. I have total cholesterol @ 289. HDL is 51 but LDL is @ 207. TG is @ 129. Please advise if is still need to go ahead with the TSH? Never had this in any of my earlier tests 6 months back. Thanks, Joseph

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Joseph,
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern.
Incomplete data like age, duration of your problem and any associated symptoms?
Your TSH value is raised and along with raised total cholesterol and LDL it is suggestive of hyptothyroidism. So, you have to start taking Thyronorm 25 mcg once daily for 3 months then the thyroid function tests are to be repeated to check the efficacy of the prescribed dose.
Besides, you should also take cholesterol lowering medication such as Atorvastatin once daily.

You also need to have certain life style changes such as avoid taking fatty meals, fast & junk foods, eat home cooked foods, increase the intake of fruits and vegetables and do regular exercise.

Hope this answers your query.
