Is Gabapentin Advisable For Neuropathic Pain In The Legs Of A Diabetic Person?

I have painful Diabetes neuropathy in one leg only. Doctor has prescribed Gabapentin 100 mg. I think just for some relief and its not like a pain med, but just for injured nerves ? So will I have to take this for the rest of my life and are there long term side affects from this drug ?
