How To Treat Urticaria During Pregnancy?

Hi Dr.Prasad,
This is MadhuPriya aged 30 years, married and staying in Bangalore. I have been suffering from urticaria for past 2 years. When I consulted a skin specialist I was told that it can not be cured and was asked to take Allegra 180mg whenever I have symptoms. Now I am 6 months pregnant. For the first 3 months I did not have allergic symptoms at all. After that I have been having severe symptoms of urticaria and I am taking allerid tablet to control it, which gives me relief for 1.5 days only. I am really worried if I take overdose of this tablet and if that will harm my baby. I am not able to do without taking a tablet also. Please provide your precious advice on this and help me get relieved of this tension. Thanks

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these allergies. Studies in animal have shown some form of adverse effects on the unborn child but there have been no such controlled studies in humans. I will suggest that you talk with your doctor and suggest that he changes to a safer antihistamine like cetirizine, loratidine, etc during pregnancy. This would be of greater reassurance than benadryl which is less preferred during pregnancy.
