How To Interpret Mri Report?

I WAS ASSAULTED WHILE ON - DUTY AS A POLICE OFICER ON 11-01-11. HAD SEVERE NECK AND UPPER BACK/SHOULDER PAIN AND NUMBNESS IN MY RIGHT ARM. WAS PRESCRIBED PT, MEDICATION, AND HEAT AND REST. THYE MRI FROM 01-04-12 SAID"MINIMAL CENTRAL C5-6 POSTERIOR OSTEOPHYTE/DISC PROTRUSION". WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS? I WANT TO GET BACK TO WORK ASAP. THANK YOU KEN

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

There is post traumatic degeneration cervical spine disc between C 5 - C 6. This is resulting in the disc herniating between the bones. The nerve roots pass through these neural foramina and you might have severe nerve root compression at that level. The nerve pain may be controlled with restricted physical activity and pain relief medication. Please do not do heavy physical activity till you are comfortable.

If the pain is increasing in severity and there is no relief even after few months of medications then surgical treatment may be helpful. Laser assisted treatment is also available.
