How To Improve Poor Mobility In The Elderly?

My mother is in care, she is 98 and has always had good health until 4months ago, now she has symptoms of heart failure, shortness of breath, swollen legs and ankles, poor mobility and she just wants to die. Although the home do what they can to keep her mobile, today she has fallen, grazed her leg and is now leaking fluid from it. What can we do to support her in this situation, we all wish she would go to sleep and not wake up as this is what she wants, how long can she go on like this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all it's sad to know what your mother had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, she may need aggressive treatment with oral or intravenous diuretic medicines as well as keeping legs up while lying or using pressure stockings at times as well as beta blockers and ACE inhibitors medicine for her heart failure management and her situation can get better over time.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin
