Well I am starting on a saw palmetto regimen, and I need to know what dosage I can take, I have heard 2 doses of 160mgs a day but then I have heard of people taking as much as 1000mg or more twice a day. I also would like to know if taking ibuprofen or aleve is safe while taking saw palmetto

Dear Patient,
Thank you very much for your question. Saw palmetto is used to decrease the symptoms of an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, according to the latest research usage of saw palmetto to ease the prostate symptoms is controversial due to positive and negative results of undergone clinical trials. Some scientists believe that daily usage of saw palmetto 320 mg for 2 months before TURP or transurethral resection of prostate reduce the postoperative complications and even amount of blood loss during surgery. Some scientists, on the other hand, do not believe the effects on saw palmetto. So it is hard to say how efficient saw palmetto is for treating BPH. Anyway you can try for yourself and see whether there are any improvement of your symptoms. If you want to use it the dosage would be 320 mg daily or 160 mg tab twice daily.
However, if you want to use saw palmetto never take it with drugs that impairs blood clotting because saw palmetto itself slows down blood clotting and that may cause bruising and bleeding. Since Ibuprofen slows down blood clotting, I do not recommend you to take saw palmetto while you are taking Ibuprofen. I hope that I answer your question.
Good Luck!
