How Long Does It Take To Heal Blood In The Ear Drum And Tinnitus?

Hi - My doctor says I have blood in my ear drum which is currently painful and I have tinnitus. This occurred following an ear swab. Please can you advise how long it will take to heal and whether exercise such as running would put more pressure on the ear drum? I am worried it may perforate. Age 39; 176cm; 190lb and reason for ear swab was due to 2 recent ear infections.

Hi,

Noted the history about 39 years old person having ear infection, swab taken and now doctor says about collection of blood in ear drum, have tinnitus, wants to know how much will it take for healing and whether exercises like running would put more pressure. If there is development of blood clot inside the ear drum then obviously you have to avoid anything that is strenuous.

The blood will eventually be removed or absorbed so not to worry too much although it can take weeks together for proper healing. Continue the medications liker antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and whichever be provided by the doctors. If there is blood inside the middle ear cavity then a condition called glomus has to be ruled out by an appropriate MRI and CT scan or angiography and may then need a surgery. Also, see for diabetes and hypertension and get a good control over it if you have.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
