How Long Does Cytotec And Mifepristone Take To Affect An Abortion?

Hello. I'm 3 mos pregnant. My LMP was nov 13, 2013. I took 8 cytotec and 10 mifepristone orally and 2 cytotec was inserted in my vagina. I just took those medicine this morning. I bled after the 2nd dose but thats all. Im also having cramps. Do i have to wait for it to take effect and how long do I have to wait? or I need to take another dose? I'm feeling a little movement in my stomach, like a lump moving downwards but it wont come out. What do i have to do?

Hallow Dear,

Yes, Mifepristone and Misoprostol are the medicines used for termination of pregnancy up to 9 weeks of gestation. They effect the termination of pregnancy usually within 24 hours but may be up to 72 hours after the last dose of Misoprostol. However, the dosage of these medicines you have taken is far above the prescribed dosage. You should have taken these medicines only with Gynaecologist's advice.

Since you have bled after these medicines, there are good chances that you have aborted completely. However, please get the completeness of the abortion confirmed by ultrasonography. If the uterus shows any products of conception, you will have to get it completed by some surgical method like MVA aspiration or evacuation.

These medicines cause developmental abnormalities in the baby. Hence, if they fail to terminate the pregnancy, it should be terminated by surgical procedure.

Since you have taken very large dose of the medicines, your uterus is contracting very strong giving rise to pain in abdomen. You may take some anti-spasmodic painkiller like Meftal spas for pain relief.

The movements of the baby start after 5 months. So the movements you are feeling in the abdomen are not the movements of the baby, it may be the contracting uterus.

Please report to the Gynaecologist after the ultrasonography if the products, completely or in part, are visualized in the uterine cavity.

I hope this helps you.
