How Common Is The Thinning Of The Retina In Adolescents?

how common is the thinning of the retina in adolescents? my son is 15, and was told by his optometrist that he has thinning in both eyes. he started football conditioning and it would break his heart to not be able to play football again. any advice would be appreciated.
