How Can Severe Pain In The Hips Be Treated?

I have terrible hip pain and a doctor told me it was bursitis and gave me an injection on Friday which helped right away. It was worse yesterday and even worse today. Is there something else I should be doing to help it heal? Exercise, heat, cold, elevation?

Hello,

As per your history your husband was having terrible pain in the hip joint. There are many causes of hip pain. Radiating pain occurs due to nerve defect. So the probable reason could be bursitis or compression of any other nerve supplying to hip.

This can be confirmed and other causes can be excluded by the following investigations:
1. Nerve conduction tests
2. X-ray hip and back
3. Blood glucose levels
4. Serum calcium

Coming to treatment part, you can follow the below:
1. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug
2. Extension and flexion exercise
3. Pain killer spray can be used
4. Muscle relaxants can be used for 1 week
5. B complex vitamin tablets

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vamsi Krishna Chittimoju
