How Can Severe Headaches Be Treated?

i have had severe headaches for many months and doctor has given me migraine meds. Does not work. These headaches wake me up in a dead sleep and very severe. I constantly have a headache. An over the counter mi graine med eases it for about an hour then it is back. The last week I have also been woken up from a dead sleep with severe cramps in my calves.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If your doctor stamped your headache as a Migraine, then starts following advice:
1. Take caffeine and paracetamol medicines while having an acute attack of a Migraine.
2. If it does not resolve, then you can also try other NSAIDs like Ibuprofen, diclofenac etcetera.
3. If all these are not working, then you have to take triptans (sumatriptan or rizatriptan drugs).

For further prevention of attacks:
1. Start taking tablet propranolol daily.
2. If not decreasing the frequency in 1-week, then increase the dose.
3. If it still not decreasing the frequency, then adds another prophylactic drug like Flunarizine, Valproate, Nifedipine as mentioned earlier in lower dose and increases it accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Hiren Hirpara
