Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am taking Xeljanz XR 11mg per day for my RA I have noticed I am coughing more and having a tickle in my throat. I am not feeling sick or anything just this cough. I have been taking Xeljanz for almost 2 months now. Should I be alarmed by this or continue taking this until I see a doctor in about two weeks
** Thanks for contacting with your health concern.
1. Xeljanz [tofacitininb] is used to treat mild to moderate rheumatoid arthritis in adults who have tried methotrexate without successful treatment of symptoms.
2. apart from having signs of infection [fever, chills, sore throat], COUGH is a documented serious side effect of the drug so if experiencing the same, make sure not to stop the drug immediately since stopping suddenly can make your condition worse.
3. clinically significant side effects/long term issues may occur during the treatment with xelijanz and treating physicians should be aware of this phenomenon, and because of the ADR [ adverse drug reaction] is very variable thus you should talk with your attending physician as to how to proceed further.
PS. under no circumstances you should stop-change- alter the dosage without first consulting with your doctor, so call your Doctor right away.
