How Can Blood Pressure Levels And Cholesterol Levels Be Kept Under Control?

My husband is on blood pressure & cholesterol meds, metformin, aspirin and takes other natural herbs. He wants to take 500mg Epimedium capsules which also contain Saw Palmetto Berry powder 100mg, Polypodium Vulgar powder 20mg, Tongkat Ali Root powder 100mg, Mulra Puama Root powder 20mg, Maca Root powder 250mg, L-Argnine HCL 20mg, Mucina Puriens extract 15%, and Panax Ginseng root powder 20mg, and I am concerned it might hurt him. He is being very stubborn. What is your take on this herb. Can it be safely taken in smaller doses such as 1/8 of the contents of a capsule to see how it might affect him?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

1. In the present scenario, both high blood pressure and high cholesterol are more of lifestyle disorders, thus apart from taking any herb/medicine it is the incorporation of a suitable dietary regime and lifestyle modification(s) which one has to undertake for better management of the disease like:

i. Exercise: a brisk walk for 45 minutes, yogasanas,pranayam
ii. Stress Management: Meditation, Relaxation techniques.
iii. Low-fat diet: No to cholesterol-rich food items and taking items that actually reduce cholesterol [onion, garlic, soya bean, apple, curd of skimmed milk]
iv. Elimination of known risk factors: Smoking/Obesity/Diabetes/Mental Strain
v. Drugs: Coronary Drugs [ in case of emergency]
2. Ideal cardiotonic which I usually prescribe to my patient is/are: Arjunarishta, Prabhakar Mishran Tablet
3. Also periodically get reviewed by a qualified Cardiologist to exclude any heart disease in you and also other reliable tests like Stress and ECHO.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
