Heart Randomly Races Fast. Why? Will Slow Breathing Help?

Ive been curious about my heart beating really fast at random times. Sometimes im just laying in bed. Or something scares me and it acts up. It beats very hard and fast. I am 28 and 5 2 114 lbs. Im tryig to work out morw to be healthy but im a stay at home mom and rarely get out of the house. We only have one car. My fathet says he has the same thing and its best to remain calm because if i freak out it will get worse. I concetrate on breathig slowly to get it to slow down buy someimes it takes a little while. General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

First of all try to stay calm.

The fact that you can actually feel your heart beating really fast indicates that you are having palpitations. I would advise you to get a couple of tests done like hemoglobin, thyroid function test, blood sugar levels, ECG to rule out other causes of palpitations.. If the test results come back as normal , feel reassured that nothing is wrong with you, it must be a simple case of anxiety.

Exercise will really help. Even if you feel it is difficult to step out of the house to get a work out, you can always get an aerobics workout DVD and do it at home.

Another thing that will help is yoga/ relaxation exercises. Sign up for yoga/relaxation classes.
Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day.

Hope this helps.
