Heart Fluttering From Cpap Machine For Moderate To Severe Sleep Apnea. History Of Heart Palpation. Suggestions?

Hi Dr. Grief,
I have a history of heart palpitations, but I got these under control in the last several years through dietary changes (particularly from cutting out sugars, dried fruits, etc). I was just diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea, and after a month of doctor's visits and sleep tests I was given a CPAP machine. I began using the CPAP machine and began getting heart flutterings (similar to heart palpitations) that very day. The next day (after a night of using the machine) I woke up with heart flutterings. Any thoughts?

Hi user
Thanks for positing your query on healthcare Magic
You problem when you use CPAP there is discomfort in the form of palpitations and you have H/o palpitations.
Use of CPAP for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) require sleep study in two steps first to diagnose and second for tritration of CPAP pressure, sometime if diagnosis is obvious then second step is done directly. Issue is this if required pressure is not applied (CPAP level) then there may be high carbon di oxide or low oxygen. This may be explaination of you problem.
There is possibility your palpitations are having other reason and trigger by CPAP. I mean by other reasons are anxiety, hyperthyroidism, cardiac arrhythmias.
Please be evaluated for palpitations if was not previously.
If possible get an ABG (arterial blood gas) analysis after continuously using CPAP for few hours
Hope this information help you. Take care
