Have Osteoporosis. Has Drinking Alcohol Contributed To Problem? Family History Of Osteoporosis

I m 70 years old now have osteoporosis . Soon to have bone density to establish severity. Most of my adult life I used alcohol, just guessing but maybe a drink a day. Has this contributed to the problem? My mom also has osteoporosis, died at 89. I stretch and walk but ache all over after 4-5 hours of housework. Thanks for your concern.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Yes, definitely alcohol consumption contributes to osteoporosis.

The general treatment guidelines for osteoporosis includes
* Life style modifications - regular physical activity and Exercise, avoiding smoking and alcohol
* Nutritional supplementation of Calcium supplementation (1500mg/day) along with Vitamin D (600-800 IU/day)
* Pharmacologic therapies - which includes Bisphosphonates

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
