Have Heart Murmur. History Of DVT. What Are Beta Blockers? Use?

I have a heart murmur but have never had any problems with it. I am now getting ready for a total knee replacement and my family doctor wouldn't release me for the surgery next week because she thinks I need to see a cardiologist first in case a beta blocker is needed for the surgery.I have a history of DVT's .What are beta blockers and what might they be used for?

Hi thanks for your question.
Beta blockers are group of drugs used for various heart ailments, usually for control of blood pressure and heart rate. These drugs decrease the heart rate. During surgery beta blockers are used by anesthetist to control the heart rate and blood pressure. You are going to have total knee replacement surgery, which can be done under regional anesthesia, where Beta blockers have no role. However you need a cardiac clearance, to rule out any organic heart disease as you are having heart murmur.
Hope this answers your question
