Have Diabetes And Low RBC Count. Blood Occult Test Positive. Asked To Do Colonoscopy. Reason?

I have diabetes and have trouble keeping my levels low. I had a low red blood cell count so my health provider gave me a blood occult test to take. The results showed positive for blood. Now a colonoscopy is scheduled and I was told they wanted to schedule my sooner than normal because of these tests and because I have diabetes. But, no one will say why? What s going on with me?

Hi thanks for your question.
Indication for colonoscopy is positive occult blood in stool.Positive occult blood means blood is present in your stool and you are bleeding some where from your large intestine. This bleeding is responsible for low haemoglobin what you call as low red blood cell. With the colonoscopy your physician could see from where you are bleeding, what is source of bleeding and what is cause of bleeding and accordingly management plan can be formulated.
Hope this answers your question.

General & Family Physician Dr. Nsah Bernard's  Response
Hello,

thanks for posting on HCM,

If you are having low RBC count and occult blood in stool then it is an indication that you are having a gastrointestinal bleeding that need to be confirmed soonest with a colonoscopy and determine the source of the bleeding so that an appropriate treatment can be established. The bleeding could be from upper GIT or lower GIT.
Possible causes include but not limited to:
- 2–10%: cancer (colorectal cancer, gastric cancer)
- 20–30% adenoma or polyps
- Bleeding peptic ulcer
- Angiodysplasia of the colon
Causes are age dependent and also risk factors dependent. So your doctor will have to check that out.
Yes the fact that you have diabetes might complicate the cause of the GIT bleeding and hence the bleeding itself. Diabetes will have to be further controlled and treatment for the occult blood put into place before you loose any more blood.

Hope this helps.
