Had An Appendectomy. Removed Lot Hysterectomy. Did Scar Tissue Removal Through Open Incision. Time To Heal?
I just had an appendectomy (laproscopic) and the surgeon also removed lots of adhesions (from previous hysterectomy). The scar tissue removal was not laproscopic. I now have an OPEN incision 7.4 cm x 3.5 cm that has a 'wet to dry" dressing that my husband needs to change everyday. this is the most grotestque thing I have ever seen. How much time will I need off from work to recover somewhat. It's been 12 days since surgery. The surgeon does not appear to be too understanding of FMLA and time off from work ,etc.
Hello Thanks for writing to us. Normally, any open laparotomy would take a week to heal. By then you would have a totally dry stitch line. Stitch removal too would happen by the 7th - 8th day. it is not normal to have a wet exuded dressing on the 12th day, and I am sorry for the lack of empathy on part of the surgeon. Please schedule a visit, and rule out any underling infection / granuloma and if it is just a superficial stitch line infection, then the bad news is that only daily dressings would make it better. Only the surgeon can give you an estimate - how long you have to dress the wound. All the best.
