Had A Bike Accident. Have Pain In The Interior Left Knee After Sitting For A Long Time. Slight Swelling. Cure For Symptoms?

Hi, I had a dirt bike accident approximately one month ago. I have since had horrible pain on my interior left knee. Especially after sitting stationary for an extended time. I did not have any swelling until approximately 3 days ago. Now there is slight swelling and pain is more constant than before. Any thought as to what I may have done to it or recommendations for healing would be much appreciated. Thank you

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Any injury to the knee joint with persistent pain, swelling or limitation of motion needs evaluation to rule out any intraarticular pathology.

I suspect either you could have injured MENISCUS or CRUCIATE LIGAMENTS inside the knee joint.

You need MRI scan to diagnose either of the above injuries.

Temporary management for knee injuries is as follows -
* activity modification by avoiding impact sports which causes more strain on the knee joint
* using an elastic compression bandage to reduce the swelling
* Ice packing to alleviate the pain
* Physiotherapy to strengthen the quadriceps muscle

Consult an orthopedic surgeon for a detailed workup and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
