Got Swelling And Bruising Playing Softball. Should I Be Concerned?

Hi. A week and a half ago, I took a hard shot to the shin playing softball. It swelled (egg shaped lump) right away, but that pretty much went away fairly quickly and there is very little bruising. I have still been playing softball and walking.....it doesn't hurt too much, but I want to cry out in pain whenever it is touched (we're talking anything more then lightly running my finger over the area). I've been dying to get back into running after having a baby 3 months ago, but this has me worried. Does it sound like a bone bruise? Is it something I should definitely get checked out? Thanks!!

i can feel your concerns

it seems to be a muscular injury or hematoma.
i advise you to take rest.
avoid playing and lifting heavy weight
cold or ice massage will reduce swelling
take some painkiller like ibuprufen
if it does not improve then consult your doctor for clinical examination and some investigations like Xray

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us

The large egg shaped lump is likely to be due to a hematoma formation in the area.
Since you are able to wear weight, bony injury is unlikely. You need to avoid massaging the area and take a mild pain killer for relief. Avoid sitting for long hours. Do a cold compress on the area of injury.
The pain and swelling might take over a week to subside. In case there is an acute pain and a sudden increase in swelling then consult your physician for a direct examination to rule out any infection in the area.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
