GERD, Hypoglycemia, Breast Cancer, Neuropathy, Mild Stenosis. History Of Psoriatic Arthritis. Done Glucose Tolerance Test. Help

I have a history of psoriatic arithritis,no treatment, Gerd that's been treated the past ten years with Nexium and episodes of hypoglycemia (verified by glucose tolerance test) and breast cancer 9 years ago. I get checked regularly at a presitigous cancer hospital. I have had MRIs sonograms and labs. All normal to date. Recently, I developed a tingling, burning sensation at about T9 T10 back area as well as a burning sensation and tingling in both hands left greater than right. MrI revealed mild stenosis no tumors. The symptoms started one day with tingling on my back and palm area proximal to the phalanx of the pinky and ring finger area. Could this problem be due to the long term use of Nexium? Presently I am weening myself off of Nexium. I am taking B12 tablet, an apple daily as well as two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 8ozs of water twice a day. The Gerd has improved but the neuropathy has not let up. The evenings are the worse. I am 5'8" and weigh 146 lbs. I exercise regularly with weights and walk 4 miles 5 times a week.
I do have some minor joint changes in my fingers and toes as well as chronic pain in my gastroc soleus muscles. My back gets very stiff but I exercise to maintain mobility and have no noticeable spine mal-alignments. I suspect the psoriatic arthritis may also be contributing to my problem. I am uncomfortable and it is beginning to takes its' toll on me.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Your symptoms of tingling in hands is in no way related to NEXIUM usage and are due to your cervical spine pathology possibly a protruded disc causing compression over the exiting nerve roots.

The general treatment guidelines are as follows -

* Soft Collar: Soft collar allow the muscles of the neck to rest and limit neck motion. This can help decrease pinching of nerve roots with movement. Soft collars should only be worn for short periods of time, because long-term wear can decrease the strength of neck muscles.

* Medicines: Analgesic are needed in the acute phase. Muscle relaxants are essential for relieving muscle spasms once the acute pain subsides. Neurotropic vitamins like METHYLCOBALAMINE (activated Vit B12) or PREGABALIN will help in alleviating the neuropathic pain.

* Cervical traction: may enlarge the disc space, permitting the prolapse to subside. Intermittent cervical traction for not more than 30 minutes at a time. Weight upto 8kg can be added.

* Physiotherapy: Once the acute phase of pain has subsided, Isometric strengthening exercises of the paravertebral muscles are started. Improving neck strength and flexibility with simple exercises may lessen discomfort and pain. Moist heat can be useful

* Epidural steroids: are useful for patients with severe radicular pains in the limbs. Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory preparation and so its injections in the "epidural space" can decrease swelling as well as pain.

If the symptoms do not resolve with the above measures, consult an orthosurgeon and follow his advice.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
