Does Pacemaker Cause Severe COPD And Pneumonia?

My mother had a new pacemaker put in (her 3rd) and she is 83, with COPD, and asthma. After the pacemaker was put in she experienced heart failure and severe COPD, after she had pneumonia. She is not bouncing back. It has been 7 months and the COPD is quite bad. Is this due to the new pacemaker?

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

1. Pacemaker does not aggravate COPD. On the contrary, the symptoms, attributed to COPD, may in fact be due to ongoing heart failure. Consult your cardiologist who will reassess your mother's cardiac status and modify the treatment.

2. In addition, COPD symptoms were apparently aggravated by a viral pneumonia. Hence, a more aggressive treatment of COPD is required. Addition/increased dose of inhaled/oral steroids, along with bronchodilators in nebulized form is required.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will prescribe suitable/modified treatment.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
