Does Increasing The Dosage Of Niacin SR Pose Serious Health Concerns?

My wife was take Vytorin 10/20 mg for here cholesterol for 3 years and it has not helped very much. She seen the doctor again and was given NIACIN SR (NIASPAN) 500 mg. My wife is worried about the increase in mg from 10/20 - 500. Is there a serious health concern about the increase?

Hi,

Actually, Vytorin is a combination drug of Ezetimibe and Simvastatin, so your doctor actually switched her to a completely different medication. Niaspan would be a reasonable starting dose for this medication.

Since the prior medication did not have much effect according to what you wrote, your doctor may have wanted to try a different class of medication to see if that helped more. But you can be reassured that this new medication is safe to take at this dose.
