Does Excessive Lemon Consumption Cause Dry Skin?

Hi .. I am a 25 year old female (h: 168cm / w:63kg)... 3 months ago I started to drink lemon water regularly (about 3 cups a day) with adding honey sometimes. During this period I noticed a decrease in my appetite (lost 4kgs as a result) and my skin is becoming unbearably dry. So, I wonder, is over consumption of lemon related to dry skin?

Hello,

Thank You for your query!

There is no relation of drinking lemon water with honey and dry skin. Lemon has high contents of Vitamin C which is a good anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants in diet helps normalizing appetite and increases metabolism which helps you lose weight. However, none of this is medically proven.
Dry skin could happen due to changes in weather (cold and dry weathers), reduced daily consumption of water, thyroid abnormalities, atopy (tendency to allergies), eczema, certain medicines especially for acne. Sometimes over use of harsh soaps and astringents/toners can dry out your skin too. At times its just genetic !!
Dry skin as you know is not a skin disorder. It is a tendency of your skin to lose its natural oils. Medically, skin has a protective moisturizing layer of natural lipids and fatty acids. This helps the skin stay soft & supple and at the right pH. At times due to the above mentioned external as well as internal factors, these natural lipid layer is disrupted leading to loss of water content and moisture of your skin. This also acts as a window for infections and other inflammatory problems.
What is the solution?
Apply a good water based moisturizer for the face and a oil based thick moisturizer for the body. Followed by a good sunscreen use. At night use a vitamin E based moisturizer immediately after cleansing/washing your face. Stick to mild face washes and avoid soaps on the face. For the body pick up a good glycerine based body wash. Avoid long hot showers as well ! Avoid using too much toner or astringents after cleansing. We usually recommend non-perfumed non-alcohol based moisturizers.
You can start good multi-vitamin supplements once a day for your skin. Fish-oil capsules and vitamin E capsules work very well for dry skin.
If you have any of the above mentioned internal conditions, I advise you to see your physician for the same.

Hope I have helped you with your queries !
