Does HCG Injections Cause Any Side Effects During Pregnancy?

My wife had a miscarriage on 26th Jan 2011 (it was 7 week 2 days pregnancy from LMP). She was bleeding for last 4 days and the ultrasound scan done one days before the miscarriage was showing a good heart beat (162). doctor suggested SUSTEN (vaginal progesteron) but the next day she had a complete (spontaneous) miscarriage. After miscarriage that she was experiencing some pain on the lower right abdomen, doctor suggested a ultrasound scan. The reports suggested bilateral Poly cystic ovaries and a 2cm Fibroid. Doctor suggested some blood tests (FSH, LSH, FBS, LIPID profile, DHEA etc) and the blood reports suggests everything normal. We were avoiding pregnancy before, so it was our first try and she successfully conceived. Now again after 3 months trying she again conceived (5 weeks pregnancy from LMP - 27th July 2011). We are a bit concern this time. We took opinion of two different doctors. One suggested us Duphaston for first 15 days and the other suggested HCG injection in every 5 days for first trimester. She just took her first HCG injection on 31-Aug-2011. But now we are confused, should we continue with the HCG injections or we should continue with Duphaston . Could you please help us in taking a decision as we have read in internet that HCG injections have side effects and can cause ovary cysts and birth defects in fetus.

Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Duphastone is progesterone which supports the pregnancy by making uterine environment more favourable for foetus. hCG injection is human chorionic gonadotropin hormone which is given to the patients with threatened or recurrent miscarriages as it supports the pregnancy. Both the drug belong to different categories and can be given singly, or in combination. hCG injection is usually given till 12-13 weeks of pregnancy, and is found to be safe for the fetus.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.
