Does Gemfibrozil Prescribed For High Cholesterol Increase The Risk Of Bleeding Stroke?

I am concerned about resuming gemfibrozil for very high cholesterol. I was previously on this med until I had a bleeding stroke. My neurologist informed me I should NEVER take aspirin. Since gemfibrozil seems to have some blood thinning effect will this increase my risk for another bleeding stroke?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi! I have gone through your questions and I understand your concern.

I would say that Gemfibrozil and Aspirin are not the same group of drugs .Gemifibrozil is used for high cholesterol level , aspirin as real thinning blood. Yes you should not take aspirin.

The only effect that Gemfibrozil has in related to bleeding is Thrombocytopenia ( low platels level) .
This is a side effect that is very rare, less than 0.1%
So the main cause of the bleeding stroke could probably have been something else than Gemfibrozil. The risk oof having bleeding stroke cause of Gemifibrozil is very low.
I suggest todo blood test , check your liver kidney every 3-6 month .

Wish these help .
