Diarrhea, Stomach Ache And Vomiting. Type II Diabetes And On Insulin. Advice?

Hello, I have type 2 diabetes and recently (3 weekd ago) was put on insulin. We added metformin 500mg 2 times a day and glimepiride 4mg 2 times a day 1 wk later. Also added atorvastatin and lisinipril. 1 week ago after returning from a party where i probably had too much to eat and going to bed, I woke up at 12:00 am and was vomiting and had extreme water diareah. I blamed it on the food. Ever since then I have had diareah. It seemed worse in the morning and then subsided in afternoon. The last two days I have had a stomach ache with lots of diareah and last evening vomitted again and anything I drank would come right out like water. I have little kids around and they have had some kind of virus with vomitting and diareah. But theres only lasted 1 day. Any ideas? I am trying very hard staying hydrated. Dont want to bother my Endocrinologist until Monday

Hello,

Vomiting and diarrhea started only after the party. So it is mostly likely Acute gastroenteritis following food poisoning.
In this situation drink oral fluids at regular intervals in small quantities.
Take ORS also.
Regularly check your blood sugar for any hypoglycemia.
Adjust your insulin and OHA doses based on the intake of food and blood sugar levels.
If the symptoms are not subsiding then consult your doctor for detailed evaluation.

Hello,
Your history suggests that it can not be viral diarrhoea since it is already one week since you started it.There can be 2 causes for your diarrhea.
1... Side effects from metformin as it can lead to nausea,vomiting and diarrhoea.
2... It can be bacterial diarrhea but chances look less since you are not having any fever at the moment.
In my opinion stop the metformin,keep on taking plenty of oral fluids to stay hydrated and consult your doctor.If taking fluids orally is difficult,then go to ER to get intravenous fluids.
