Could The Watery Stools Be Due To Crohn S Disease?

My daughter is 28,65 kg. in 1997 was diagnosed with UC. Initially contrlled through medications: asacol, pentasa and ultimately asathioperine. She went through periods of relapses. One year later, she had heart surgery to remove what was initially suspected to be mixoma but turned out to be a blood clot. She was put on clixane injections ever since and was substituted with warfarin later on and still taking it. In 2001 she had pancolectomy surgery which was successful. But a few months later she noticed a blister-like sac in an area in the abdomen where she had one of several tubes to remove body discharge during surgery. When the blister burst she noticed that resulting fluid had a stool smell suggesting existence of a tract extending from the bowel to the surface. And this tract persists up to date. Several tests were carried out and some doctors believe this to be a fistula , a symptom of Chron s, even though my daughter doesn t have any of the other symptoms known to be associated with Crohns. But, every now and then she experiences episodes of watery stool and frequent visit to wc(more than 10 times) against 5-6 times in normal times. Please advise Thanks

Hello,

Operated colectomy for Ulcerative colitis, heart surgery for clot and permanent on blood thinners and now so-called fistula all indicate that there is a need of the following to find the exact cause and not to go by suppositions:

- Excision of the tract and submit for histo-pathology too get the correct diagnosis.

- MRI fistulogram or any such tests to determine whether this is a fistula or a blind sinus and once confirmed to go for definitive surgical procedure to go for cure.

- This may also be tuberculosis or so and if a specific cause is found then to go for a proper medical management also.

-Correction of anemia and hypoproteinemia is very important in such treatment hence get the blood tests and take a corrective treatment too.

- Loose stool indicate the need for tests on three consecutive days.

Hence, the baseline studies to get the correct cause and take an appropriate and specific treatment if the foundation of proper management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
