Prozac (fluoxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor which works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain and it is commonly prescribed in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. Tramadol is an opioid drug used to relieve moderate to severe painful conditions. If taken together, these medications can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome which is characterized by confusion, hallucination, convulsions, extremely high BP, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, shivering or shaking, blurred vision, severe muscle rigidity, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe cases may result in coma and even death. Using Tramadol with Prozac may also increase the risk of seizures not related to the serotonin syndrome. Prozac may also increase the blood levels of Straterra (atomoxetine) thereby increasing the side effects such as dizziness, dry mouth, loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, and palpitations.
