Could Polyps Shown On Follicular Ultrasonography Be Cause Of Worry?

Hi, I am got a follicular Ultrasonography done(TVS). The report reads - 'Endometrial echo is of normal thickness measuring 7.9mm and shows hyperechoic lesion measuring 24*7mm suggestive of polyp'
My Doctor had suggested me for a surgery earlier for the removal of polyps. Is the surgery really needed? Does the polyp pose problem for conceiving?

Hi,

Endometrial polyps can develop due to increased estrogen levels leading to excessive thickening of uterine inner layer, endometrium. The possible symptoms due to endometrial polyps are:
- Excessive bleeding during menstruation, inter menstrual spotting
- Pain during menstruation
- If polyp is bigger in size, that by affecting the implantation area and by occupying most of the uterine cavity can affect the fertility
- Polyp protruding through the cervical os can lead to infections and also by obstructing the ascent of the sperms can lead to infertility.

Your doctor might have suggested hysteroscopic removal of polyp to counteract these effects. You can follow her advice as this can possibly increase the chances of pregnancy.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
