Could Oral Intercourse Cause Herpes Despite Protected Vaginal Intercourse?

I have only had sex with one person and everytime we did use a condom. However before we had sex I did give him oral. I had asked him before we had ever done anything if he had any stds because I knew he had been with a lot of women. He said he didn't have anything and he would never lie. However people in my very small town said that he has herpes and now i'm kind of freaking out. I don't know what to do to calm myself down. He did have a cold sore or two before but they went away and he wouldn't let me kiss him when he had them because he said that they were contagious. Help.

Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Herpes gets transmitted by direct Or intimate contact. Unprotected oral sex is a risk factor for transmission of herpes virus; if one of the partners is infected transmission is possible.
In this particular case, if your sexual partner carries genital herpes then you could have acquired oro-labial herpes from this particular oral sexual act.
Protected vaginal sex is not 100% safe in terms of risk of transmission of herpes because a condom covers only the shaft of the penis and therefore leaves a lot of area exposed to direct contact with the infected surface, during sexual intercourse.
However, if your sexual partner had only oro-labial herpes then most likely you would be safe.
Nonetheless, I suggest you to get yourself tested at appropriate interval. Testing for herpes by blood test can be performed earliest at 2 weeks.
Moreover, If you notice any erosions or sores on the labial Or genital mucosa you must get yourself checked with a venereologist.
