Could Absence Of Foetal Pole Be Indicative Of Blighted Ovum?

Hi there, I am currently about 6 weeks pregnant, and I have had a 37.9% increase in my HCG levels over the last 48 hours. At 5 weeks 2 days scan, they were unable to detect a fetal pole. Is this suggestive of a blighted ovum or is there still a significant chance the pregnancy will be viable? Thank you

Hello.
Thank you for contacting HCM.

At 5 weeks 2 days gestational age by ultrasound the findings are normal. you do not need to worry.

The gestational sac at this particular stage of pregnancy has two things indicative of viability. A yolk sac and a foetal pole. Foetal pole appears at 6+ weeks so its normal if its not visualized at this stage. whereas yolk sac shouldbe visible by now....if it is not present it can be blighted ovum.
B- HCG is also fine as it takes around 3 days to double.

I would recommend follow up ultrasound after 2 weeks for the confirmation of pregnancy.

Please contact ER immediately in case of acute pain or bleeding.

I hope this answers your query. Please feel free to contact HCM again if you have any concerns.
Wishing you good health.
