Coughing Lot Of Phlegm, Black Red And Brownish In Color. Frequent Smoker, Had Heart Surgery. Is This Side Effect Of Smoking?
I am a smoker and I also have had major heart surgery, I realise that I am stupid for smoking but I am 67 and wonder that if I stop now, will I really feel the benefits. I seem to be coughing a lot more now and bring up quite a lot of phlegm, sometimes, first thing in the mornings, I have noticed colourings in it, black, red and brownish. I get out of breath because I have a heart condition anyway and I'm reluctant to waste my doctors time if this problem is just due to smoking. Thank you.

Yes your problem of coughing with lot of phlegm is due to smoking.Smoking irritates and damages mucosa of respiratory tract.Make cillia (small hairs in respiratory tract which keep respiratory tract clean) to work slow besides producung carcinogens responsible for cancer of lungs.Smoking also damages blood vesscels and promote athersclerosis(deposition of fat in wall of blood vesscels).Atherosclerosis is main cause of cardiac problems.You are 67 years it is a more reason for quiting smoking.With advancing age it can cause more problems.Yes you will be benefited from quiting smoking.You will feel the difference from day first and risk of cancer start decreasing from first hour.Hope now you will stop smoking.

No doubt smokers cough is there, but usually blood don't present with phlegm.
As you are already an operative case of heart , so precaution is very necessary for you.
Blood in phlegm or expectoration may be due to ,
Bronchitis,
pulmonary tuberculosis,
bronchiectasis,
lung abscess,
cancer.
X ray cheat and blood examination are very important , so consult a physician and get his opinion.
