Child Suffers With Frequent Bouts Of Cough And Cold With Fever, Squeamish Stool, Vomiting. Taking Montair. Right Treatment?

I am writing for my granddaughter, Miss Ela Nandi. She is three years and four months old. Since the last 3/4 months, every 2/3 weeks she has been suffering from bouts of cough and cold. It starts with a day of running nose and sneezing followed by persistent phlegmatic and choking cough, often intensifying at night, preventing sleep. However, upon stethoscopic examination by Doctor, chest is mostly found to be clear of phlegm. Her condition is occasionally accompanied by temperature, and occasionally by soft, sqeamish stool . Very occasionally cough leads to retching and vomiting . She is allergic to all citrous fruits and maybe to other items as well which we do not know for sure as of now. She is being treated with allopathic medicines which include Montair, and recently prescribed Asthafen for two weeks and to report back on condition of child. Is the treatment proper ? Do the drugs contain steroids ? What might be any injurious side effects of the medication ? is comprehensive cure possible ? Kindly give your advices. Thanks and regards D.Datta e-mail address : YYYY@YYYY

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi Datta,
Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic,
Frequent upper respiratory tract infections are common in children up to the age of 6 years, because of repeated exposure to respiratory infections and after 6 years they developm immunity to the most common occuring infections.
The prescribed medication for your child doesnt contain any steroid and the treatment is appropriate and proper according to her symptomatology. The side effects of those medications are rare.
Comprehensive cure is possible for defined and recognised infections but for most of viral illnesses only symptomatic therapy is required and in allergic condition ,the identification and avoidance of particular allegen is crucial in treating the problem.
Hope i have answered your query.

Pediatrician Dr. Rajiv K Khandelwal's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

The medications being given to your grand-daughter are to relieve the symptoms of asthma. They do not contain steroid.

As you mention that the lungs of the child are clear I do not see the need of giving anti-asthma medication. At this age children do get repeated attacks of upper respiratory tract infection and a decongestant syrup would be more appropriate. Kindly discuss with the treating doctor.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter an early recovery.

Regards,

RKK
