Child Complains Of Forehead Pain, Had Hip Pain On Trying Kernig Maneuver. Treatment Required?

my 5.5 year old daughter just complain about forehead pain, she cried and now she is sleep. nothing unusual, no fever , I just gave her ibuprofen for kids. I am always scared about meningitis so I tried Kernig maneuver and she said she has pain in hip. I tried same maneuver with her 8 years old sister she also said she has pain in upper leg muscle (but this one is not sick). I did Brudzinski s maneuver but that was fine on little one, no stiff neck . can you advice me what to do, shell I take her to hospital?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi

Please relax.

Meningitis is suspected only if a child has fever, head ache and other symptoms like irritability/excessively cranky, aversion to light or any other neurological symptoms.

Head ache alone does not indicate meningitis.

It might be due other simple causes like migraine/ sinus head ache etc.

And regarding these manoeuvres, one has to be really careful and meticulous in interpretation of the results. Only a doctor can give the right interpretation.

I would suggest that oral Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) in a dose of 15 mg/ kg/ dose be given. You may give three to four doses in a day. She might get okay with that.

In case if the head ache persists or she develops fever or any other symptoms, you must visit your Pediatrician.

Hope I have answered your query.
Best wishes,
