Child Bitten By Pet Dog Who Used To Fall Frequently Sick Due To Viral Infections, Died Recently. Any Harm To The Child?

Hi, my son was bitten by our pet dog on the area between the eyes and on the forehead last 24th of Dec 2012 at 11:00 pm. We rushed him to the hospital and he was given vaccines (ERIG / PVRV / ATS 3000) immediately. After 3 days he was given another shot of PVRV. On Jan 2, 2013 he was given PVRV and Toxoid. He still has 3 follow up schedules on Jan 21 (PVRV), Feb 25 and Jul 25 (Toxoid). Our dog was sick and kinda irritated before the incident, continuously lost his appetite until he suffered from viral infections. Just yesterday, Jan 14, 2013 the dog died. The dog had its anti- rabies vaccine last Sept 2012. Is it related to the biting? Will there be bad effects to my child? Thanks.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,
Thank you for your query,
As you told the dog was sick and irritable before the incident the dog might be having some illness like viral or any other illness.
Yes the biting may be related as the sick animals will be irritable and they bite even in unproved situations.
As your child is recieved ERIG,PVRV,ATS 3000 immediately and on the process of taking the other remaing injections according to schedule, nothing to worry as this schedule will provide full protection if all the rabies vaccination injections are taken according to full schedule.
You can convey the the death of the dog to your doctor and according to his advise proceed further.
Hope i have answered your query.

Pediatrician, Neonatology Dr. Ravikiran Reddy's  Response
Hello you have done a good thing by taking your child to the hospital immediately and your doctor has taken a wise decision. When ever you have a dog bite irrespective of its vaccination status and either a pet or street dog you need to wash the bitten area in running water if possible with soap for atleast 15 min. A rabid dog can be of two types, ferocious type or lethargic type. In your case the dog is of ferocious type. It's better you complete your schedule and give anti tetanus coverage.
Thank you
