Child. Lost Appetite After MMR Immunization Followed By Cough, Cold And Mild Fever, Weight Loss. On Breastfeed. No Other Complaints. Suggest

Hi Doctor,

my son is 16 months old. though he was good enough to eat the normal meal such as rice dal chapati etc. he didn't like cookies biscuits and we were quiet happy about it. his weight was 9.350 k gm. earlier his weight was according to the month even his weight was 9 kg when he was 9 months old. but as place changed because we had to move from the place where we stayed to a place which is around 2500 kms away from the old place and food is entirely different he was unable to eat this food for a month and lost his weight.

now, in beginning of this month we took for immunization and MMR was given to him. two days later he was caught by cough and running nose also he had fever. he lost the interest of eating any thing just he is depending in breast feeding it almost went for five days. but after seeing his condition by force we started giving rice with water, sometime we make pest of it and give but he cries.

the medicine which were given to him during those day are, paracetamol syrup for fever, asthalin for cough and also he has motion for one day i think for that Amoxycillin was given and another more for running nose i forgot name of it. so these medicines were given to him. he was also having mucus and during his breath his gouge was noisy, fever persisted more than six days. now his fever went down, mucus and noise of throat almost reduced. it is there but not much. Today even we have given bath too. now we feel that he is OK but he is not eating any thing, he does not like. he has lost his weight too. he is happy and active.

would like to get suggestion ...is there anything to bother about??????

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

I can feel your concern about the child.

During any infection, the children's appetite will decrease and this is common.

Once the infection is resolved, their appetite gradually increase, so nothing to worry and be patient during feeding the child.

Don't force him to feed and try to feed him with patience and the feeding act should be playful and joyful for him.

There is normally decreased appetite in children after the age of 1 year due to comparatively less growth rate after the age of 1 year.

You can follow two spoon method, high chair, and finger foods to increase his interest on food.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

Appetite decreases during infection. So do not worry regarding that. What is the weight of your kid now.

Birth weight triples by the age of 1 year. So is your kid around that weight now?

Encourage and give him food with plenty of calories. Give him meal in a way he likes.

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
