Can Surgery Cause Personality Changes?

About 3 years ago my husband, age 49 at the time, had surgery. He had a subdural hematoma which prior to the surgery caused: headaches, dizziness and finally he began vomiting. After the surgery, the doctor told us he suffered a very mild stroke. Does this kind of surgery cause personality changes? he seems to be more depressed... he gets very agitated, and we cant seem to calmly discuss matters. He is not as motivated to get up and work in the yard, pick up his clothes, even fix his car like he used to do. He seems to feel his 15 yr. old son should do more around the house to earn money for: school lunch, or his clothes. If I say too much, I feel like I m nagging or being to cynical. But yet, if I don t push nothing gets done, or I take care of things. I sometime think rational reasoning is really gone... any advice please would be very helpful...thank you

Psychologist 's  Response
Hello
Before we try to improve your husband's condition. its important for us to understand what he's going through. At such a mid age, we go through a transition when we start feeling we are not capable of much as slowly we are slipping into old age. He's getting too dependent on what is already there and has no zeal to improve the situation. Your husband's surgery added on to this negative feeling.
Seems like your husband is in a serious state of depression. His behavior is not because of physiological factors because of psychological disturbance.

I understand that at such point of time, you also lose your temper. But right now he needs you to be calm and patient with him. Don't treat him like a patient but also be empathetic of his condition.

He has been in this condition for the past 3 years which is deviant. I would suggest you should consult a psychologist or psychiatrist to see improvements in him sooner.

Best of luck!
