Can Eye Massage Cause BRAO?

Hi Dr, I had an eye massage in a facial salon which suppose to help remove my dark eye circles. It was one hour of treatment which includes hot and cold compress and machine massage around the eye area. The beauty specialist also used her hands to massage the area between my eyebrow and eye balls - which was quite hard. My eyes were closed the whole session. When I finally opened my eyes, I couldn t see in my right eye.. after a few minutes there was a white pie shape blind spot just on the lower part of my eye, the rest was okay. Since the sight is inverted, I suspected that it was because of the hard massage of the specialist. The next day, I immediately went to the eye doctor and I was diagnosed with BRAO. It happened early this year. I m only 26 years old when this happened. I have perfectly 20-20 eye sight before this and I still somehow have good vision when I try to move away from the blind spot. Is it possible that an eye massage can cause BRAO? It has been months and the blind spot is still there, I just went to follow-up check ups with the eye doctors. I even went to 3 different doctors but all they can is to monitor the progress. Is there anyway I can get my perfect eye sight back again? Sincerely Yours, Girl1986

Hello
It seems from the history that you are having branch retinal artery occlusion. Eye massaging may not be related to branch retinal artery occlusion and infact eye massage is used to treat artery occlusion to dislodge the the thrombus which may be occluding the artery.
The vision involvement in branch retinal artery occlusion is rare and if involved is because of involvement of the macula.
The condition is known to improve and it will take time to improve as your doctors have told.
Hence I advice you to continue the advice as per the advice of your doctor.

Thank you
