Can Dark, Swollen And Lumpy Eardrum Cause Serious Ear Damage?

my 15 year old son has recently complained of hearing loss in his right ear, took him for a hearing test where we were told he had considerable hearing loss in it, his ear drum is dark, swollen and lumpy, he was given a nasal spray and medication but nothing has improved, we are due back at the doctors very soon, what will happen next and is it serious ?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Dear, possible causes for this are middle ear infection, ruptured eardrum, earcanal infection, mastoditis, chronic sinusitis with ear abscess. Any discharge/pain?Any prior trauma to the ear?Any dizziness/ringing in the ear?If yes can consider acoustic neuroma. Yes, condition if left untreated can cause serious ear damage. Consult an ENT to get further assessment to undergo appropriate treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
