Can PEP Treatment Prevent HIV?

Hi, i was having a sexual intercource( vaginal ) yesterday when the condom broke. I am worried about contracting HIV. I read that it is possible to start PEP treatment within 72 hours after intercource to prevent HIV infection. Please confirm if I should start PEP treatment ?

First of all it is not called PEP , rather it is called nPEP(Non occupational Post Exposure Prophylaxis) . Breaking of condoms during sex is equivalent to having sex without condoms and puts at risk when you are unaware of the status of your partner and have some abrasion leading to bleeding,. So I guess you qualify for a nPEP(Non-occupational Post exposure prophylaxis as per CDC , USA guidelines), though you have be careful about your periods (are you on pills) and take appropriate measures or report to your Gynec .For prophylaxis of other sexually transmitted diseases (like syphilis , gonorrhoea-)you wiull have to cover up. . You will need to test for Hepatitis B and C too.
You can take Tab DINMEK or Cytokem E or Duovir E Kit (which is combination medicine of Tenfovir 300mg + Lamuvidine 300 mg + Efaviranz 600mg) 1 kit or tab daily for 28 days as nPEP.
But before starting we need to have a base line HIV testing so that we can compare at later periods --6 weeks and 6 months as per the protocol . Anti retrovirals can cause few side effects as any medicines , but the adherence to these medicines has to 100%. Hope this helps.
Regards
