Can MRI Detect Drinking Habits?

Hi! I am a 17 year old female. I recently got an MRI because I was having pain in my eye. The doctor said I was fine, but he wanted to talk with my mother. Is it possible that from my MRI he could tell I occasionally drink? I go to 2 parties a month at most, and i do tend to drink until i get drunk. BUT I'm not an alcoholic or anything. I haven't been doing this for a long time.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

MRI for brain and eye will not show any changes in brain if you go for two parties a month. It shows features of alcohol consumption in someone who drinks regularly. Occasional alcohol intake cannot be traced in your situation. Your doctor probably wants your mother to know that there is nothing to worry. If there is continuous light drinking also, in a few years changes might be observed in the brain. Persons whose alcohol consumption is light to moderate have less severe white matter lesions and brain infarcts on MRI than abstainers or heavy drinkers.
