Can I Use Hormonal IUD If I Have Focal Nodular Hyperplasia?

Can I use hormonal IUD if I have focal nodular hyperplasiar? I was diagnosed years ago and I stopped oral contraceptives, the FNH decreased in size and I have been using a copper IUD. The IUD has given me a lot of trouble lately, a lot of pain and constant bleeding, so I want to find an alternative.

Hi,

The use of hormonal contraceptives, whether, combined oral contraceptive or progesterone only pill, does not result into disease progression or severity in women with hepatitis, cirrhosis or benign focal nodular hyperplasia, though the evidence is very limited.

Also, there is no conclusive study about hormonal implants, may be the same effect as with oral contraceptive. However, in the presence of a minor controversy, it is advised to monitor its progress, particularly size by periodic imaging etc. once a year at least.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
