Can I Increase The Dosage Of Eltroxin In Pregnancy?

hello doctor.i am 26 years old and i have congenital hypothyroidism and taking eltroxin from my infancy.now i am 7 months pregnant and my TSH levels go very high i.e. 23.4,till 6 months TSH was in range.now how can i raise my dose and is there any damage to my child because of this?

Hello,
Surely you can increase the dose. If the TSH is 23, you must add 30-40% excess to current dose. ( which means, if you are taking 100 mcg, you should start taking 130-140 mcg ). The TSH should be kept below 3 during rest of pregnancy.

The damage to baby is unlikely. Baby will start making own hormone by now. However, it need support from mother's side too. The main problem is in the initial 3 months, but you said, TSH was normal then. So not to worry. Start taking higher dose of Eltroxin from tomorrow itself
